Debt recovery in the Sultanate of Oman

Recover what you are owed in Oman.

Unpaid invoices, dishonoured cheques and trade debts — recovered through amicable settlement first, and through the Omani courts when that is what it takes. You pay only when we recover.

The rules changed on 1 October 2025. Oman’s new Court of Investment and Commerce now hears commercial debt claims and must decide them within 90 days — against litigation that once ran five years or more.

What we recover

Four routes to your money

Most debts never reach a courtroom. We start with the fastest route that works, and escalate only when it stops working.

Court action

When recovery needs a judgment, the file is referred to and handled by our associate lawyers in Oman — and we manage it end to end.

Legal recovery

The recovery ladder

How debt recovery works in Oman

Five stages. Each one is a real legal step with its own requirements and its own clock.

1
2–3 months

Amicable recovery

Structured reminders, a formal demand, then negotiation. Most undisputed debts are settled here, without a court and without a fee until you are paid.

2
~3 days to issue

Order for payment

Where you hold a cheque, promissory note or bill of exchange, the court can issue a payment order. The debtor has 15 days to contest — or it becomes final.

3
90-day rule

Court of Investment & Commerce

Commercial claims now go to a dedicated court with mandatory electronic filing, which must decide the case within 90 days of referral.

4
Enforcement judge

Enforcement

Bank accounts attached, wages garnished, movable and immovable property seized and sold, shares and third-party-held assets pursued.

5
Last resort

Insolvency

Where a debtor has stopped paying its debts as they fall due, an undisputed commercial claim can support a bankruptcy petition.

Fees

No recovery, no fee. In plain terms.

You pay a percentage of what we actually recover, and nothing if we recover nothing. There is no retainer, no monthly charge, and no fee for assessing your file. Court fees and any disbursements are separate, quoted in advance, and never incurred without your written approval.

Common questions

Before you get in touch

How long do I have to claim a debt in Oman?

For obligations between merchants arising from their commercial business, the limitation period runs to ten years from the date performance fell due. Shorter periods apply to certain claim types, so an older debt is worth checking rather than writing off.

Can I charge interest or a late payment penalty?

Interest on a commercial debt is set by ministerial decision and is currently 6% unless you agreed a lower rate. Contractual late-payment penalties, by contrast, are not enforceable in Oman — a distinction that catches out a lot of foreign creditors.

My customer’s cheque bounced. What happens now?

A dishonoured cheque is both a route to a fast payment order and a criminal offence under the Omani Penal Code. It is the strongest position a creditor can be in. We will tell you which route actually gets you paid fastest, which is not always the criminal one.

Do you handle debts owed to companies outside Oman?

Yes. That is a large part of what we do — UAE and wider GCC businesses owed money by Omani customers, and international creditors with an Omani debtor. The 1995 GCC Protocol matters here, and we will explain exactly how it applies to your file.

What do you need from me to start?

The invoice or contract, any cheque or promissory note, a statement of account, and whatever correspondence exists with the debtor. If some of it is missing, send what you have — the assessment is free either way.

What does it cost if you do not recover anything?

Nothing. There is no fee unless money is recovered. Court fees and disbursements are the only separate costs, they are quoted before they are incurred, and they are never spent without your written approval.

Note. The procedural summaries on this site describe Omani law and practice in general terms and are not legal advice. Rules, rates and timescales change. For advice on a specific file, we will refer you to our associate lawyers in Oman.

Send us the file. We will tell you what it is worth.
